The food safety code, with all its provisions, is a measure of protection that ensures our food and the environment is free from harmful contaminants. However, the term “food safety code” is too general in itself and may apply to more than just food products. For example, the term food safety refers to the safety of a product when used for human consumption.
We have learned by now that pesticides have adverse effects on humans and animals. We know that GM foods are dangerous for health. But, there are other food safety challenges that we may face, and these are not just the two major food safety issues.
As mentioned above, genetically engineered seeds are also used in the creation of genetically altered crops. Genetically engineered seeds are produced using crops that are engineered to withstand herbicides. This is the reason why GM crops have been called “Roundup resistant” crops. Herbicide-tolerant crops have increased yields, reduced pesticide use and environmental pollution.
Genetic engineering is now being applied in many other ways, such as livestock and poultry, as well. In some parts of the world, there are restrictions regarding the use of GM food, and the debate about the future of gene manipulation in agriculture.
Glyphosate, an active ingredient in Monsanto Roundup, is the key ingredient used to treat this herbicide. Its chemical structure allows it to easily penetrate deep down into the soil and kill weeds and grasses. Glyphosate is also known to cause cancer.
The United States government, the World Health Organization, the European Union, the European Food Safety Authority, the American Medical Association, the National Cancer Institute, and the Environmental Protection Agency are among the bodies that have concluded that glyphosate cancer is real. The conclusion was based on extensive studies performed in conjunction with scientists from the University of Leicester in England.
These experts concluded that long-term exposure to the herbicide, which is used to control weeds and protect crops, is linked to an increased risk of cancer. of the bladder and pancreas, kidney, stomach, liver, and breast cancer. The use of this herbicide has also been linked to kidney cancer in men and women.
New studies have shown that Glyphosate also affects mice and rats. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, a division of the World Health Organization, concluded that Glyphosate is a “probable” human carcinogen. The findings were released just days after the publication of a study that showed that the herbicide causes DNA damage in human cells.
In the U.S., farmers are required to abide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Code. It states that herbicides must be used “seasonally” for a given area. This stipulation does not require that they be used in a way that is harmful to the environment. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Trade Enforcement (OTE) regulates trade practices.
The OTE’s Enforcement Office has found that some companies have violated the Food Safety Code. It says that they have violated the code by using herbicides on fields that were not specifically identified as being for agricultural use, as well as on crops that were not genetically engineered. They have also been accused of misclassifying crops as food sources and failing to protect them from pests.
A recent case that has come to light in OTE’s enforcement has found that two companies were guilty of violating the Food Safety Code because they did not label certain soybeans as “genetically engineered.” They did not label them “natural.”
Some companies have been fined, while others have received warning letters from the government. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have also issued warnings to these companies.
