Genetic Profiling
No, it is not radiation therapy. Rather, the term “genetic profiling,” as it is commonly referred to, is not about the use of drugs to cure anything. It is about the use of medicines – mostly molecular, radiation and surgery-based drugs – to specifically treat cancer. Cancer, after all, is primarily caused by a faulty gene; in other words, by a change in the DNA of the cells of an individual that causes the cell to be abnormally active, causing abnormal growth and progression of the cancer cells. Genetic profiling, then, focuses on the alteration of this DNA through medical intervention.
Because such an alteration can only occur if there is a change in the genetic profile, it becomes imperative for a medical professional to be able to accurately establish whether a given individual is a carrier of the disease. In addition, genetic profiling helps ensure that no other person will develop the disease. For that reason, most physicians use a method known as genetic testing to determine whether a patient is at risk for developing cancer in the future. These tests look for changes in the DNA, which can be detected by the use of a sample from a patient that has previously developed cancer. If the DNA shows changes, the physician can conclude that the patient is at risk for developing the disease and recommend medical intervention.
For individuals and families with a health insurance plan, this type of testing may not be available. However, there are many private health insurance companies that provide genetic profiling as a form of preventative care. Such plans have been created because they are concerned that certain groups of individuals are at greater risk for developing serious diseases, particularly those who already have a preexisting illness, or are at a higher risk because of genetic traits that could lead to a higher chance of getting a particular disease.
While genetic profiling is not a complete replacement for conventional medicine, many scientists and medical professionals believe that it can improve the quality of life of many patients. A major reason why genetic testing has become a popular form of prevention is because it helps to identify individuals who are at high risk for a wide variety of medical conditions. When such individuals are identified, they can receive proper health care through routine screenings, diagnostic tests, and/or surgery. In some cases, these individuals may then receive medication to counteract the effects of their underlying conditions.
